Apple Wireless Mouse

If you have a Mac and want to get rid of the spaghetti of wires cluttering up your desk, you may want to consider the Apple Wireless Mouse.

This mouse costs approximately $69, and is a Bluetooth only device, therefore your Mac has to have Bluetooth support. It also requires Mac OS X v. 10.2.8 or later with Bluetooth upgrades installed.

Setting up the mouse is very easy. These are special batteries supplied by Apple but you can also use any standard AA batteries. Underneath the cover of the mouse is a tiny slider to adjust the click strength. There is an on-off button to help you save power when you are not using the mouse. The CD that accompanies the mouse contains the software and firmware updates for your mouse. You can also apply firmware updates from the Knowledge Base. Before you can start using your mouse, you have to pair it with your Mac. To do this, you simply turn on the mouse and set it up through the Bluetooth Setup Assistant, which automatically recognizes the mouse almost immediately. Through your “Keyboard and Mouse” control pane, you can setup other parameters such as mouse speed, see the battery level, click force, etc.

It is shaped like a bar of soap and has no buttons! The mouse has a white and clear and Lucite color scheme you see on the iMacs and PowerBooks. To click you simply press the mouse and it responds with an audible feedback. The fact that there are no right or left click buttons on the mouse, makes it ambidextrous, and does not require any special setup for right or left handed people. Thanks to the optical tracking method, cursor tracking is reliable, although there appears to be a slight lag in response time. Apparently this is because of its power saving feature, which kicks in after about 10 seconds of inactivity. It also seems to have a very good range of operation, and you can use it even from as far as 30 feet away! The mouse uses a unique and innovative technology called Adoptive Frequency Hopping, to eliminate interference from other wireless devices.

Apple has always believed in making its computers and peripherals look sleek and behave flawlessly, with minimal device configuration needs. The Apple Wireless Mouse follows the same philosophy and in true Apple tradition is a breeze to setup and use.
