eMac

The eMac is touted as Apple’s “all in one” computer at an affordable price starting at $799. The entire computer is housed in a single enclosure made of polycarbonate plastic that contains the computer, or “CPU”, and the monitor. This rests on a stand that can tilt from -5 to +15 degrees and swivel in 360 degrees. The monitor is a brilliant 17” flat screen that provides distortion free and reduced glare viewing.

At the heart of the machine is a 1.42 Ghz PowerPC G4 processor coupled with a configuration that’s blistering with high-tech specifications. The eMac is available in two off the shelf variations – The “Combo Drive” version which comes with a “combo drive” as the name suggests, which allows you to read/burn CDs and only read DVDs. Then, there is the “Super Drive” version which comes with a dual layer DVD read/write drive, which of course can read/burn CDs as well. Or you can even choose a build to order machine, custom configured with the options you choose.

It has inbuilt support for AirPort Extreme for wireless connectivity to other Macs and with the internet with an AirPort base station. It is equipped with Bluetooth to wirelessly exchange information with other Bluetooth enabled devices such as PDAs and mobile phones. It also offers Firewire and USB2.0 ports to provide for high speed connectivity with digital cameras, camcorders, printers, scanners and the iPod. And lastly, it also has ports for attaching external speakers and inputs from external devices such as cassette players.

To be true it is the combination of the above mentioned hardware and the accompanying array of software that makes the eMac really stand out. It comes with the Mac OS X Tiger, which is the world most advanced operating system as claimed by Apple. Some of its unique inbuilt applications include “Spotlight” for easy search of information, “Dashboard” and “Safari RSS” for access to the information from the internet, “iChat AV” for audio/video conferencing, “Automator” to streamline repetitive jobs.

It also comes with “iMovie HD” that helps you make movies at home, “iDVD 5” that helps you author DVDs, “iTunes”, to create your own music playlists, “iPhoto”, to make your own photo albums and GarageBand to create your own music. It is when you use all of these applications together in a project, that they act as tightly integrated tools that will help you unleash your creativity.

In the final analysis, the eMac is a veritable tool of creativity at an excellent price point.
